 Q) What was it like working with Kendall Jenner?
A) Kendall was amazing. Even though it’s early in her career, you really
can
see that she is a natural model. She was born for this.
She was willing to
get splashed by waves in order to get the shot, so that says something.
Q) Would you ever work with Kendall again?
A) Absolutely.
Q) Were you excited to work with Kendall?
A) Definitely. I had already photographed Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe, who
all
take great pictures, so I knew the odds were pretty good that Kendall would
be amazing too. I was right.
Q) Did you think that there would be so much controversy over the
photoshoot that you did with kendall? (we personally loved the shots).
A) Kendall, Kris, Monica and I all spoke about the concept before the shoot,
which was designed specifically to broaden Kendall’s Wilhelmina
professional-modeling portfolio. Kris and Monica were with me the entire
shoot to make sure Kendall was comfortable every step of the way. Everyone
is entitled to their opinion, but some people just like to stir up trouble.
I stand by my work and feel the images are not only classy and artistic, but
also appropriate for their intended venue.
Q) So we know that you have photographed all of the kardashian/Jenner’s but
would you ever do a family photoshoot?
A) I just did! We shot the family Christmas card, and it was the first time
I had all of them in one room. They are all so busy that coordinating their
schedules isn’t easy. I only had 12 minutes to get the shot before one of
them had to catch a plane, but we nailed it!
Q) What do you like most about the Kardashian/Jenners?
A) They are a VERY close family. And they’re actually really down-to-earth
and funny, which is rare given their level of celebrity. They just laugh and
tease each other all the time, which is hilarious to watch. I can’t think of
too many strong, tight-knit families in the media right now…it’s mostly
everyone trying to do it themselves. It’s a beautiful art to watch how they
work as a team.
Q) Who has been the easiest Kardashian/Jenner girl to work with on a
photoshoot?
Nice try. I’ll never tell, they are all amazing.
Q) What so you think it takes to be a good photographer?
A) First, you have to be a huge nerd, because quality photography is equal
parts artistic and technical. It’s very similar to architecture in that
regard, but with fewer rules. Second, you have to love capturing images so
much that you would do it for free. Third, you have to have a strong need to
show others how you see the world.
Q) Did you want to be a photographer at a young age or did you have another
career in mind?
A) I’ve wanted to be a photographer from the time I was 6 years old. It was
either that or the CIA. Photography is far less stressful (usually).
Q) How do you feel about using alot of photoshop on clients?
A) I leave it up to the client. Art is by nature subjective, and it’s
unrealistic to expect that everyone will like the same thing. I don’t feel
it’s any different than wanting to look good in the latest clothes or
putting rims on a car. It’s not for everybody. Some people just want to look
their best, and retouching is a lot less painful (and permanent) than
surgery.
Q) If you could describe yourself in 3 words what would they be?
A) I can only get it down to 4: Curious, Fortunate, Grateful, Happy
Q) Do you have any words or advice for people who would like to get into
photography?
A) In “The Art of the Deal”, Donald Trump says you better pick something you
love because
there will be plenty of times where you’ll be doing it for no
money.
That’s some of the best advice I’ve ever read, and it’s totally true.
Don’t become an artist if you want to become rich.
It can definitely be
done, but there are much easier ways to make money.
The business of
photography is very competitive, and requires you to stay constantly
focused.
On the other hand, the ART of photography, if it comes naturally to
you, is effortless.
That’s where I get to be free to capture the world the
way I see it, meet amazing people, travel, and share my vision with the
world.
If you’re willing to put in the time, this business can be A LOT of
fun. I mean crazy-awesome fun. I can’t think of a more enjoyable career.
I would just like to say a big thank you to Nick for taking the time out to answer the questions for us,
